Waxhaw Settlement

I’m touring the Waxhaw region, an area nestle between Charlotte, NC and Lancaster, SC west to the Catawba River. This is the land of the Scot-Irish, and a few Germans, originally called the “Waxhaw Settlement” who made these forested hills their own. The Yamasee War of 1715 killed the remaining Waxhaw tribe (and many other area indigenous peoples). The British settlers of colonial SC would find the new immigrants fiercely loyal to their new way of life. Last night I slept on the same land that President Andrew Jackson did as a boy. Jackson lost his brothers and Mother all who fought in the Revolution. Fighting as part of the American irregulars, he and a brother Robert were captured in 1781, contracted smallpox and Robert died. His mother died while attempting rescue of cousins from a British naval ship. Orphaned and battle-hardened at age 15 years old, I’ve always respected President Andrew Jackson, without agreeing with all of his policies. Today’s President has no such pedigree to call himself a populist.
