Livermush & Cheerwine

When I remember to eat, it is usually because I see an advertisement for some type of food I’m not familiar. Or I need protein, specifically eggs. Which is how I learned about Livermush. According to https://www.romanticasheville.com/livermush_festival.htm Livermush is a “southern food product composed of pig liver, head parts, and cornmeal.” Seasoned with pepper and sage, I was offered a slice at the diner, inside the Save-On pharmacy, with my eggs and grits a couple of mornings ago in Statesville, NC. I opted for a taste and discovered it tastes like gritty smushed liver, with a bit of crunch. Not bad, but I’ll go for the third egg to get my protein zip.

I’ve also discovered Cheerwine. I don’t drink sodas, so I was curious and clueless when I saw the street banners on every light pole in downtown historic Salisbury, NC. Wandering over to the Rowan County Museum, http://www.rowanmuseum.org/ I discovered a two-room exhibit celebrating 100 years of this beverage. The volunteer suggested that I walk over to Spanky’s Homemade Ice Cream & Deli to try it as an ice cream float. Wow! Yummy cherry flavor+caffeine+sugar!

I stopped for the third time at a local hangout near Lake Norman State Park where I usually get an evening sandwich. I finally asked what the “Alaska White” was on the extensive menu of bar-b-que, burgers, and milkshakes. She said, “fried fish, hush puppies, fries, and slaw.” I asked what type of fish, and was told: “white.” Since there was a line of hungry people behind me, I didn’t ask why it was called “Alaska.” I’ll save that question for another time.
